History & Staff

We have years of experience caring for families, from all walks of life. Each family comes to us because they know we are leaders in our profession, dedicated to excellence in service, and have the highest integrity.

When we sit down with a family, we have just one goal: to create a fitting, memorable and affordable service for their loved one. Together, we explore the wide variety of services and products available, as well as a wealth of creative ideas and suggestions.

Together, we'll design a memorial or funeral service that suits their needs now, and in the future. Families who come to us know that years from now, they will have deep peace-of-mind because in coming to us, they've done their best to honor their loved one.

Our History

In the 1850's the Ratterman family emigrated from Germany. Two of the brothers, George and Herman Ratterman, settled near 8th and Green Streets. In 1864 the established an undertaking business at 11th and Market Streets, named G. & H. Ratterman; Carpenters and Makers of Fine Coffins.

In 1902, John B. Ratterman, son of George took over the business at the age of 24. He married Lillian Ackerman two years later and together they had 12 children, consisting of ten boys and two girls. They moved into the Ackerman home at 2114 West Market Street in 1914. Here the family moved to the upper floors and turned the first floor into the first true "home for funerals" in the city of Louisville.

Eventually John B. Ratterman paired several of his sons up to open other funeral home locations in Louisville. The funeral home on Lexington Road was the first in 1939. It was operated by John Jr. and Carl Sr. Ratterman. In 1947, Joe Sr. and Cletus Ratterman opened the Fourth Street location, and later in 1977 together they expanded to the Southside Drive location. In 1963, Emmett Sr. and Oscar Ratterman opened a funeral home on Bardstown Road, and later expanded to Cane Run Road in 1974.

Now, the fourth and fifth generations of the Ratterman family own and operate these locations as four separate businesses with close ties to one another.

Ratterman & Sons Funeral Home on Bardstown Road, is owned and operated by Jim, Alex and Michael Ratterman continue a long tradition of dedicated and compassionate service that has been our family’s hallmark for over 145 years.

Jim Ratterman joined his father Emmett, uncle Oscar and brother Tony in 1971. Jim has always believed in the value of being involved in our Louisville community and has participated in several organizations. Among them, the Buechel Optimist League, the St. Joseph’s Orphanage Board of Directors, Hosparus of Louisville Board of Directors, Catholic Cemeteries Board of Directors and as an active member of the Buechel Area Business Association. Jim is a graduate of St. Xavier High School, class of 1967 and the University of Louisville. In 1970, Jim married his high school sweetheart Pam Reis. They have had 3 children and now are proud grandparents of 6 grandchildren. Jim more than anything, loves family gatherings which explains why he is so passionate about funeral directing. It is a time for families to come together, remember, share and in some instances reunite.

Michael Ratterman joined his father in business in 2003. Michael is a licensed funeral director and holds a pre-arrangement insurance license. Michal also is an accomplished local artist. Michael is a graduate of St. Xavier High School, class of 1992 and from Bellarmine College. In 2009, Michael married Annie Schauer and together they make their home in historic Irish Hill.
