October 25, 1932 - March 1, 2021

James Anthony Lutes, Sr., 88, of Louisville, passed away on Monday, March 1, 2021, at Nazareth Home – Highlands. He is survived by his four sons, James A. Lutes, Jr. of Louisville, Gregory A. Lutes of Louisville, Brian A. Lutes (Kathy) of Pittsburgh, PA, and David P. Lutes (Alison) of Louisville; grandchildren, Megan Tafel (Tosh), James Lutes III, Dalton Lutes, Gracie Lutes, and Maggie Lutes all of Louisville and Sarah and Andrew Lutes of Pittsburgh, PA; along with many nieces and nephews. James is preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Mary Anne Lutes as well as his parents; sister, Margaret Hayden; and brother, Thomas Lutes. James was born on October 25, 1932 in Botland, KY to Victor and Mary Louise Lutes. The family then moved to Louisville, KY in 1944. He would later graduate from Dupont Manual High School in 1951. James served in the National Guard for many years and then attended the University of Louisville Speed Scientific School to pursue his engineering education. While James was in the hospital recovering from surgery, he was cared for by a very special nurse named Mary Anne Lauer who caught his eye and would eventually become his wife for over 63 wonderful years. They were married on October 13, 1956 in Madison, IN. James was employed by Reynolds Metals Company for several years before pursuing an opportunity with Kingham Trailers. His last career move would take him to Kentucky Trailer Manufacturing Company, where he served in many roles during his career including Director of Engineering before retiring in 1998 after 32 years of service. While his sons were students at St. Martha School, he served tirelessly in many roles over the years including Booster Club President, President of Parish Council, and President of Parish Festival. He enjoyed watching University of Louisville football and basketball games with his sons. He was a man of strong faith and a was a founding member of St. Martha Catholic Church in 1961. The family would like to express many thanks to the wonderful administrative and medical staff at Nazareth Home, who gave outstanding care to James during his time there this past year. Ratterman & Sons Funeral Home, 3800 Bardstown Road is handling the arrangements, but because of continual concerns of Covid-19, this week’s funeral as well as the burial at Calvary Catholic Cemetery will be private. A celebration of life will be announced in the future. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Martha Catholic Church. Condolences may be shared at Ratterman.com.
