James S. Magruder
July 28, 1938 - January 3, 2021
MAGRUDER, James S., 82, of Louisville, died Sunday, January 3, following a short battle with COVID-19. He died just 17 days following the passing of his beloved wife, Sharon A. Magruder. Jim was born in 1938 in Louisville, attended Trinity High School, and served in the U.S. Army. He spent a long career with SWH Supply Company in Louisville. He was an accomplished guitarist, and as a young man, played with several bands. Later, he shared his musical talent in several community and church settings. He and his wife Sharon loved international travel and cruising, and weekend boating on many lakes. A self-taught chef, his Thanksgiving feasts and family dinners were legendary, and many homes are graced by hand-crafted furniture and clocks lovingly and meticulously designed by his hands. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, James Cornelius and Lillian Beckley Magruder; and his brother, Marvin Magruder. While never blessed with children, Jim is survived by many close family, including Laura Ross (Ken), who was like a daughter to him, and his “honorary grandchild,” Grace Ross. Family treasuring his memory include his sister, Cheryl Myers (Tom); and brothers Daniel Magruder (Sharon); Gerry Magruder. He is also survived by loving family including Susan Myers Elrod (Tom, Alec, Miles, Graham); Col. Daniel Magruder Jr. (Jennifer, Maverick, Makenna); Kate Genesis (Kayn, Kalena, Lilly, Ronin), Amanda Magruder, Karen Magruder Wolz (Glenn); Mike Guetig (Margie, Christopher, Linda Brill, Lauren Freauf); Mary Anne Williams; Richard Young (Carol, Jessica, Margaret). Arrangements and visitation will be private for family on Saturday, January 9, at Ratterman & Sons Funeral Home, 3800 Bardstown Road. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. A mass and celebration of both Jim and Sharon’s life will be held at St. Gabriel Catholic Church later in the springtime when everyone can be together. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to Hosparus Health of Louisville, (www.hosparushealth.org).
