John Kenneth "Ken" McKiernan

June 15, 1933 - March 10, 2022

John Kenneth ”Ken” McKiernan passed away peacefully March 10, 2022 at the VA Hospital. He was born in Louisville, Kentucky on June 15, 1933 to the late Edward and Georgia McKiernan. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Carol Jameson McKiernan and son Donald, also by his infant children Edward and Ann. He is survived by his children, Ellen Young (Ross), Daniel (Irene), Susan McCullough (Mark), Cynthia McKiernan, John (Lisa), Mary Carmel Daugherty (Jim), Kenneth (Sara), Robert (Becky), Shaun (Ashley) and Matthew. He is also survived by his 24 wonderful grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Ken was a graduate of St. James Parochial School, St. Xavier and attended the University of Louisville. Ken was an Army veteran, serving in Europe from 1954 to 1956. He worked as a graphic artist in Louisville from the late 1950’s until his retirement in 1998. As an artist Ken created some fantastic work that is still in use and featured around Louisville and beyond. One notable design is the Pappy Van Winkle label. Other examples can be found in “Yes/No” question and answer books produced by Stry-Lencoff, where he was the art director for a number of years, as well as the Irish decanters he designed that can be seen on display at many an Irish pub. Ken was a lifelong member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Parish. He was a founding member of the Louisville Ancient Order of Hibernians. He thoroughly enjoyed the time that he spent with his Irish brothers and never missed parade day. In his long life, Ken was a truly loved son, brother, husband, father, Paw Paw, uncle and friend. His love and kindness touched so many lives, and we are all the better for it. A visitation will be held at Ratterman Funeral Home, 3800 Bardstown Road, on Monday, March 14th from 4-8 PM. The Funeral Mass will be held at 10AM on Tuesday, March 15th, at St. Francis of Assisi at 1960 Bardstown Road. There will be a visitation prior to the funeral at 9AM. A celebration of his life will continue Tuesday evening 6-10 at Molly Malone’s. Expressions of sympathy can be made to the Franciscan Kitchen. Online condolences may be shared at www.ratterman.com.
