Larry J. Tomes passed away Saturday, April 16, 2022 in Louisville, Ky. where he has resided for more than 32 years. He was a beloved husband, father, stepfather and grandfather. He was a friend to everyone who met him and a fixture known by all in his Highlands neighborhood. This is a man who overcame great adversity, but who persevered and should be remembered for his strength and unconditional love which he gave freely. Larry was a member of Highland Baptist Church, was a union member and former business agent of I.A.T.S.E. Local 17, served in the Indiana National Guard and is a retired Sergeant Major from the United States Army Reserve. Funeral services for Larry will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 22 at Highland Baptist Church, 1101 Cherokee Road, Louisville, Ky. with burial in Cave Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. prior to funeral services on Friday, April 22 and from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 21 at Ratterman & Sons Funeral Home, 3800 Bardstown Road, Louisville Kentucky. Larry was born in Smiths Grove, Ky. on December 19, 1947, the fifth of twelve children to Dewey and Myrtle Tomes. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Linda Jamison Tomes, Louisville, Ky., his son William Brian Tomes of New Albany, In., daughter Melissa Uribe (Jose Hernando) of Georgetown, In. and stepdaughter Tammy Knifley (Kelly) of Crestwood, Ky. He is also survived by the lights of his life, his beautiful grandchildren, Brianna Taylor, Joslyn Taylor, Christian Calderon and Jacob Knifley. He was recently very proud to meet his first great-grandchild, Mattingly Terriquez. In addition, he’s survived by four brothers, Edward Leroy (Nancy) of Lanesville, James (Phyllis) of Georgetown, Roger (Jan) of Fishers, and Ronnie (Bonita) of Clarksville and five sisters, Judy Taylor (Charlie) of Corydon, Glenna Toliver of Madison, Sherry Richmond (Ron) of Garland, Texas, and Cathy and Laura Tomes, both of Georgetown. He had many, many nieces and nephews and extended family members that meant the world to him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dewey E. and Myrtle V. Sanders Tomes, and two brothers, Billy Ray and Jessie E. Tomes. If so inclined, memorial donations can be made to Larry’s beloved Highland Baptist Church. Goodnight, dear one. We’ll see you on the flip side. Larry’s funeral service will be livestreamed on both Facebook and or YouTube on Highland Baptist Church’s pages.
