William "Bill" John Ryan

William “Bill” John Ryan, 85, of Louisville, died on January 18, 2022, just shy of his 86th birthday, following a catastrophic fall in mid-December. Survivors include his beloved wife of 62 years, Mary Ryan; son, Marty Ryan; daughters, Angela Ryan and Susan Ryan (Brian Gallup); granddaughter, Eden Gallup; and brother Father Donald L. Ryan. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Benedict and Christine Ryan; and siblings, Father James Ryan, Joseph Ryan, Sister Ann Christine (Betty) Ryan, and Robert “Bob” Ryan, Bill’s fraternal twin. An affinity for all things mechanical led Bill to the University of Louisville’s Speed School of Engineering, where he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. After retiring from Louisville’s Naval Ordnance Station, Bill devoted his time to various building and remodeling projects, including a bathroom for each daughter, an office remodel for his son, and a play structure for his granddaughter. He was also a loving and patient caregiver, first to his oldest son Bill, whom we lost in December of 2012, and in recent years to his wife, Mary. In addition to his lifelong devotion to family, Bill enjoyed a good mystery novel, a traffic-beating route optimization strategy, and a gin martini with olives. Due to the current Covid surge, the family has chosen to forgo visitation. A funeral mass (masks required) will take place on Saturday, January 22, 11 am, at the Church of the Epiphany (914 Old Harrods Creek Rd, Louisville, KY 40223).
